2004 Ford Expedition Brake Caliper Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a brake caliper on 2004 Ford Expedition?
A: Start brake caliper service and repair by taking out the disc brake caliper followed by brake fluid draining then securing it in a vise. Position the caliper into a vise and push out its pistons through the fluid port by placing wood blocks between pistons and caliper bridge while applying low air pressure. Proceed by extracting the pistons after the block removal. Throw away piston seals with boots. Avoid honing the cylinder bores because the industry does not supply pistons suitable for honed bores; replacement of the caliper becomes necessary when bore corrosion or scoring exceeds normal levels. In caliper assembly avoid both reused piston seals and dust boots as well as drained brake fluid reuse. The first step should be brining fresh brake fluid to provide lubrication for the boot and piston and seal and cylinder bore components. The brake caliper needs to sit in a clamp before installing caliper pistons that require the piston boot and piston seal to be placed on the caliper. The caliper piston should be carefully inserted through the bore but never forced in a way that would hurt it or detach from its position while also preventing any cocking motion. Use shop air through the fluid port to insert the piston properly into the bore channel. As the final step install the disc brake caliper.
