2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Air Bag Control Module on 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Service and maintenance on the restraints control module (RCM) should begin by turning OFF the ignition switch and avoid repositioning the RCM while connected to its original horizontal mounting position to prevent accidental safety canopy deployment. The center tunnel area should be checked if the vehicle has experienced a collision since any detected RCM mounting bracket deformation makes the RCM replacement necessary even without air bag deployment. Safety glasses must be worn during every repair session because they protect from injuries that might occur during accidental air bag deployment. Also avoid using memory saver devices. Electronic modules react negatively to static electricity because it creates damaging effects. A warning lamp from the air bag system will activate after removing the RCM fuse during the ignition ON phase while functioning as expected without indicating any fault. Before vehicle return to the customer inspect that the SRS operates correctly while verifying that the proper RCM is installed to prevent spurious DTCs. The service procedure starts with depowering the SRS followed by removing the center console and disconnecting the large RCM electrical connector by pinching its thumb tab then pivoting the connector position assurance lever. To complete this step remove the small RCM electrical connector through the process of pushing on its retaining tab and removing its bolt. The RCM removal process requires unfastening its mounting bolts. Position the RCM onto its bracket before installing the bolts to achieve system functioning with the correct torque values. Before securing the connection between the small RCM electrical connector make sure the connector position assurance lever is completely loose. Base the connection of the large RCM electrical connector by exerting light pressure until the connector produces an audible click then finalize the link by using the connector position assurance lever. To complete the procedure reinstall the center console followed by restarting the SRS system.
