- Q: How Can You Safely Depower and Repower the Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2004 Ford F-150 Heritage?A: Safety glasses are essential equipment during air bag module handling as they protect from possible injuries that result from accidental air bag deployments. Testing the connectors on air bag modules will immediately deploy the system and harm the personnel. Operation of the SRS system must always be checked before servicing any seat equipped with side air bags and safety belt pretensioners. One can detect the air bag warning lamp during this procedure by removing the RCM fuse F2.22 (10A) with a functioning ignition system yet this action signifies nothing abnormal with the system. The vehicle must not be released unless both SRS operation appears normal and no faults are present. The first step requires vehicle operators to disable all accessories together with the ignition switch. Departure of the RCM fuse F2.22 (10A) from the central junction box below left instrument panel requires the removal of its cover. A proper air bag indicator illumination must continue during a minimum of 30 seconds when the engine is ON and the correct fuse is properly disconnected. The battery ground cable (14301) receives disconnection next before the ignition goes OFF and back up power drainage takes one minute after disabling any auxiliary battery components. Repowering operations require tool disconnection from the restraint systems and proper connection of SRS components. The first step is to turn the ignition to ON position after reinstalling the RCM Fuse F2.22 within the CJB before replacing the cover. Ensure that all people outside of the vehicle are gone and check that there are no air bag modules obstructed before setting the battery ground cable into place. The next step requires testing of the SRS by shifting between the ON and OFF positions of the ignition key followed by waiting 10 seconds then returning the key to ON position. The air bag indicator will display continuous illumination for a duration of six seconds before it shuts down. During testing of the SRS system the indicator will show faults through non-illuminating lights, permanent illumination or flash patterns accompanied by possible warning chimes. It is necessary to repair any SRS faults before clearing all continuous DTCs from the restraints control module through a scan tool.
