One must turn the ignition switch to ON position from OFF while making sure all SRS components stay connected or using restraint system diagnostic tools for the operation. The air bag indicator will become steadily illuminated for six seconds before it turns off. An active SRS fault can cause the air bag indicator to present different states: either no illumination, constant illumination or flashing. This last condition may start during the 30 seconds following key ON activation because that period allows the RCM to finish its SRS testing. The system will produce five repeated sets of five beeps through a chime to notify the driver about air bag indicator damage and SRS system faults which require air bag indicator repairs before further testing operations can start.

Checking and fixing the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) remains essential for safety purposes following a collision. Before conducting road tests it is important to remove all restraint system diagnostic tools from the vehicle. Doing so will prevent the SRS device from failing during a crash scenario that could harm people seriously or cause death. All deployable devices including air bags and pretensioners must receive replacement with new parts along with replacement of the impact sensors and restraints control module if the devices triggered an activation or the RCM shows DTC B1231 (Event Threshold Exceeded). A complete DTC deletion procedure must follow the repair phase in required modules. Inspection of the passenger side floorpan needs to be conducted when the occupant classification system module (OCSM) holds DTC B1231. Vehicles require OCS rail replacement or new seat track installation with OCS weight sensor bolting when needed. After deployment bladder type OCSMs usually do not store DTC B1231 but functional repairs must be completed and an OCS system service kit may be required if necessary. It is essential to fix or change defective impact sensor attachment points while the installation of a new Clock Spring becomes necessary when the driver air bag module automatically deploys. New safety belt systems which contain retractors buckles and height adjusters need to be installed following any deployment of the driver or front passenger safety belt pretensioners. A systematic check of the vehicle needs to be performed to examine steering column and instrument panel components while assessing seats and safety belts and inspecting SRS wiring. Perform the necessary component replacements after the inspection reveals any damaged components.

Always wear safety glasses to minimize injury risk from accidental deployment. Handle the live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door pointed away from your body, and never set it down with the deployment door facing down.

Depower the system, remove the two steering wheel back cover plugs, and then remove the two driver air bag module bolts, tightening them to 10 Nm (89 lb-in) upon installation. Partially remove the module, disconnect the electrical connectors for the driver air bag and horn switch, and then remove the module.

Safety belt pretensioner connectors should be connected.

Connect the two electrical connectors, ensure the J-clips are in place, position the module into the instrument panel, engage the tabs of the deployment door, secure the remaining tabs, reinstall the right-hand defrost grille and pin-type retainers, tighten the passenger air bag module bolts to 9 Nm (80 lb-in), close the glove compartment, and repower the SRS.
