2004 Ford F-150 Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan, oil pump, oil pump screen, and pickup tube on 2004 Ford F-150?
A: Begin the repair process of oil pan, oil pump, oil pump screen and pickup tube by positioning the vehicle on a hoist into neutral gear while draining engine oil. The specified component removal must begin with correct indexing between the front driveshaft flange and front axle pinion flange before handling the driveshaft through proper support to eliminate unsupported drooping. Begin by detaching the four driveshaft retaining bolts after which you should support the driveshaft before removing the bolts and crossmember. A hydraulic jack with straps should support the front axle while the steering column requires rotation for clearance to remove the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt followed by the axle shaft housing carrier bushing bolt and finally the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt before lowering the front axle assembly. The oil pan removal process should not use metal scrapers or abrasive tools on sealing surfaces because a plastic scraper alongside a silicone gasket remover is required to clean the surfaces which are inspected after gasket removal. You must begin by removing timing drive parts from the oil pump followed by bolt extraction and subsequent removal of the oil pump screen and pickup tube together with the spacer before you can remove the oil pump. During installation of the new oil pump users must apply clean engine oil to the new O-ring seal which needs to be correctly positioned to avoid lubrication problems. Begin assembly of the oil pump by attaching its bolts loosely then torques them in order according to specifications. The installation process requires you to start by putting the spacer in place and adding the oil pump screen and pickup tube followed by installing the bolts. Complete the procedure by adding the timing drive components last. Follow the instructions to apply silicone gasket and sealant then place the new oil pan gasket and oil pan before installing the bolts in a loose manner. The bolt tightening process should start with 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.) followed by 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and end with an extra 60 degrees of rotation. Install the front axle assembly by positioning it correctly and slotting in the upper front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt as well as the axle shaft housing carrier bushing nut and bolt combined with the lower front axle carrier mounting bushing bolt. First position the index marks then connect the front driveshaft before installing the bolts and completing with crossmember and its bolts installation.
