  • Q: How to service and repair the lower intake manifold on 2004 Ford Ranger?
    A: The service process for the lower intake manifold starts with draining engine cooling fluids and then removing the valve covers. First disconnect the upper radiator hose then secondly disconnect the heater hose and coolant bypass hose followed by separation of engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor and coolant temperature sender electrical connectors. The first step should disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor wires from its stud bolt position after you disconnect all fuel injector connections and safely place the engine control wires elsewhere. You must release fuel pressure to remove the fuel tube while disconnecting its components before you take out the four bolts which secure the fuel injection supply manifold with fuel injectors as an assembly, then extract the fuel injectors from the manifold by discarding their O-ring seals Crank the intake valve bolt at cylinder number three then take out the push rod linked to that valve. Gently loosen the lower intake manifold by removing its bolts until the silicone sealant parts from the cylinder block. After doing this you can completely take out the lower intake manifold. The technician needs to throw away the existing intake manifold gaskets together with end seals. All mating surfaces should be cleaned before installation then examined for integrity until the lower intake manifold needs replacement after four minutes so sealant must be removed for reapplication. Position the new gaskets and front and rear seals on the four cylinder block-to-cylinder head seams while applying a drop of silicone gasket and sealant at those seams. Place the lower intake manifold before adding bolts which need to be tightened in their given sequence. Position and tighten the push rod for the number three cylinder intake valve and the rocker arm. Before placing the new O-ring seals on fuel injectors you should apply clean engine oil to them for better fit. The fuel injection supply manifold together with the fuel injectors should be reattached in one assembly while tightening the four bolts. First connect all fuel tube components and electrical wires for fuel injectors afterward join the CKP sensor wiring along with ECT sensor and coolant temperature sender electrical wiring. The completion of this procedure requires connecting the upper radiator hose and the heater hose and the coolant bypass hose followed by reinstallation of both valve covers and filling and bleeding the engine cooling system.
