2004 Ford Taurus Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Shifter on the Column on 2004 Ford Taurus?
A: Starting the repair of the column shift transmission selector lever requires first removing the key release lever and ignition switch lock cylinder. Start the process by removing the screws holding the lower instrument panel covering followed by steel rings from both upper and lower steering column shrouds. The first step involves removing the steering column opening weather seal as well as the transaxle range selector lever pin and the transaxle range selector lever with its clip. As a first step for installation secure the transaxle range selector lever clip followed by attaching the steering column opening weather seal to the transaxle range selector lever. Place the selector lever and selector lever pin into position while continuously tapping the pin until the head reaches the transmission column shift selector tube which exposes the Tinnerman nut on its lower side. After installing the steering column opening weather seal, people should move forward with the upper and lower steering column shrouds. Secure the lower instrument panel cover with screws then reinstall the ignition switch lock cylinder before completing with the key release lever installation.
