2004 Ford Thunderbird Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Arm and Disarm Air Bags Without Removing Seats on 2004 Ford Thunderbird?
A: There are two approaches to deactivate and activate the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) through methods with or without front seat removal depending on the severity of seat side air bag problems. Ensure that the SRS system is deactivated prior to servicing while installing diagnostic tools for the procedure. You should never probe any connectors which belong to air bag modules or safety belt pretensioners or side air curtain modules because it might cause them to activate accidentally. The depleting process of back up power requires disconnecting the battery ground cable and waiting for at least one minute while cutting off auxiliary battery supply. The service starts with taking out the driver air bag module while linking Tool 418-F395 to its electrical connector. Begin by removing the glove box and proceeding to detach the passenger air bag electrical connector through the motion of sliding the locking tab downwards while squeezing the locking mechanisms. Proceed by installing Tool 418-F395 onto the passenger air bag module connector then reapply the battery ground cable and maximize front seat positions. Perform another battery disconnection before removing the passenger seat side air bag moduleconnector to install Tool 418-133. Make access to the passenger safety belt retractor while disconnecting its pretensioner connector and securing connector Tool 418-F395. Disassembly procedures should also be performed on the driver seat side air bag module as well as the safety belt retractor. Prove out the system after reset of the battery ground cable. Reactivation requires the users to first disconnect the battery ground cable followed by removing diagnostic tools from pretensioner and air bag connectors before reconnecting everything then reinstalling any removed trim panels. You must reconnect the battery ground cable and check front seat positioning before performing another system proof that confirms correct functionality.
