2004 Lincoln Navigator Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the engine front timing cover on 2004 Lincoln Navigator?
A: Service and repair of the engine front cover start with left-hand valve cover and right-hand valve cover removal then proceed with the removal of cooling fan along with fan shroud. The first step requires the elimination of breakers, water pump pulley and finally extraction of power steering pump together with crankshaft front oil seal. Service the CMP sensor by removing its electrical connector then bolt and disconnect the sensor while draining engine oil with a drain plug removal. Start by disconnecting the A/C compressor electrical connector before removing the holding bolts then set the A/C compressor to one side. Use a socket to remove the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor after disconnecting its electrical connector and the bolt. Lower the vehicle after you detach power steering and transmission cooler tube brackets by removing their nuts and remove the drive belt idler pulleys. Do not utilize abrasive tools or metal scrapers to cleanse sealing surfaces when removing bolts, stud bolts, engine front cover, and gaskets because these instruments can form leak paths. A plastic scraping tool should remove gasket mating surfaces while using metal surface prep and silicone gasket remover. Installation requires an 8 mm (0.32 inch) application of sealant to particular spots followed by gasket placement and engine front cover installation with gradual bolt and stud tightening according to these steps: initially, 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) for bolts one through five and then 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.) for bolts six and seven and ending with 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) for bolts eleven through fifteen. Install the drive belt idler pulleys while using a suitable tool to lock the water pump pulley stable before installing all the necessary bolts. Apply the following bolting sequence when raising the vehicle: first to 2 Nm (18 inch lbs.), then to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) followed by an additional 90° tightening. Install the transmission cooler tube bracket together with power steering hose brackets before securing their nuts along with connecting the electrical CKP sensor and its bolt. Reinstall the crankshaft front seal and power steering pump and A/C compressor with its bolts before linking the A/C compressor electrical connector. Follow the procedure by installing a new oil filter before reinstalling the CMP sensor, its bolt, and the CMP sensor electrical connector. After installing the cooling fan and fan shroud and left and right valve covers the technician should complete the process by filling the engine compartment with clean engine oil.
