2005 Lincoln Town Car Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2005 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Before servicing or repairing the engine front cover the vehicle must be placed on a hoist in NEUTRAL position. Start by detaching the battery ground cable before removing both valve covers and coolant pump. After removing every bolt you must set the power steering pump to the side. Users should drain engine oil by taking out the oil pan drain plug followed by eliminating the four bolts and crankshaft front oil seal. First remove the belt idler pulley bolt and its components before removing bolts and stud bolts in the specified order. Metal scrapers along with abrasive tools should be avoided when cleaning the sealing surface because plastic scraping tools provide a suitable alternative for complete gasket material elimination. The gasket surfaces need cleaning with a plastic scraping tool combined with metal surface cleaner. The front engine cover needs to be installed within four minutes or else the sealant must be removed for cleaning service followed by complete dryness. The application of sealant should start at the cylinder head-to-block surface before moving to the oil pan-to-cylinder block surface. Secure the engine front cover on the dowels then install its bolts in a loose manner. Secure front cover bolts along with stud bolts in two stages by tightening fasteners 1 through 7 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) then fasteners 6 through 15 to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Place the belt idler pulley into position before installing its bolt then proceed with installing a new crankshaft front oil seal. The installer should initially tighten the bolts connecting the front oil pan before moving to a second stage where the bolts receive an additional 60-degree turn up from 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.). The power steering pump lacks usage for its front lower hole so place the pump properly before installing the bolts. Reinstall the drain plug of the oil pan and valve covers and coolant pump afterward reconnect the battery ground cable while filling the engine with oil.
