2004 Mercury Sable Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2004 Mercury Sable?
A: Positioning the vehicle on a hoist with NEUTRAL setting and disconnecting the battery ground cable stands as the first step for oil pan servicing and repair. Use this order to remove the bolts and engine roll restrictor and the bolt and ground strap and nut. Begin by taking off all nuts from the front exhaust manifold followed by removing the bolt from the rear upper manifold. Peripheral electrical connector attachment for the ground strap requires removing the connecting nut before setting the heat shield off to the side by removing its adjacent nut. Relax the bolt on the bottom of the rear exhaust manifold before setting the Y-pipe to the side. First detach the starter bolts to set the starter to the side before removing the bolt and engine rear plate. Start the procedure by draining engine oil through the oil pan drain plug followed by reinstallation of this plug after the drain is complete. Caretakers must unscrew the 16 bolts securing the oil pan next they must remove the oil pan gasket. Clean the oil pan sealing surfaces with metal surface cleaner then put on the new oil pan gasket onto its position. Only after four minutes of oil pan montage should the application of sealant be considered complete or else the reapplication process must start again followed by further drying period before cleaning and reapplication. Silicone gasket and sealant needs applying in a bead form at the front cover and rear main bearing cap points that join to the cylinder block. Following cleaning and drying of the fasteners you must tighten the oil pan bolts to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.) by applying the designated torque sequence. First reinstall the engine rear plate with its bolt and next position the starter before securing it with bolts for reinstallation of the Y-pipe while tightening the rear lower exhaust manifold bolt. The procedure requires reinstalling the heat shield followed by attaching the nut whereas both ends of the ground strap electrical connector need to be connected before installing the nut. First secure the bolt placed in the rear upper manifold followed by tightening the front exhaust manifold nuts along with the nut and ground strap and bolt installation. After reinstallation of the engine roll restrictor and bolts finish the procedure by reconnecting the battery ground cable then filling it with clean oil before performing a start-up test for oil leaks near the oil pan.
