2005 Ford Explorer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How Should You Service and Repair the Front Drive Shaft on 2005 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step before servicing or repairing the front driveshaft is to disconnect it from the transfer case since this action prevents the weight from pinching the boot between driveshaft and constant velocity (CV) joint flange which could lead to boot tearing. Service efforts should start with the vehicle set to NEUTRAL on a hoist system. Mark the front driveshaft for balance before removing all 6 CV joint bolts along with washers for replacement during installation by securing new bolts at 30 Nm torque. The repair sequence includes removing 4 universal joint strap bolts with universal joint straps along with discarding the bolts while installing new ones to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.). The driveshaft removal process demands a careful procedure for front driveshaft extraction where the can (domed CV joint housing cover) must be properly positioned in the CV joint housing but the flange cannot exceed the housing height. The new driveshaft requires even cross-pattern bolt tightening to protect it from damage. Fits use new CV joint washers and bolts but if unavailable(Threadlock and Sealer TA-25 meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5) can be used to coat the threads on original bolts. New universal joint strap bolts must be installed or the original bolts require Threadlock and Sealer TA-25 with WSK-M2G351-A5 specification coating on their threads. Check that both universal joint bearing caps properly fit into the pinion yoke flange before performing bolt torques on the universal joint strap. The installation process ends when the reverse procedure has been carried out.
