2006 Ford Explorer Drive Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Front Drive Shaft to Prevent Damage on 2006 Ford Explorer?
A: The first step when servicing or repairing the front driveshaft includes disconnecting it from the transfer case to stop the weight from damaging the boot situated between the driveshaft and constant velocity (CV) joint flange, preventing any tearing damage. Place the vehicle upon a hoist system when it remains in neutral position. Keep the driveshaft in balance by index-marking it then discard the 6 CV joint bolts along with CV joint washers but install fresh bolts afterward tightening to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.). The procedure continues with removal of the 4 universal joint strap bolts and accompanying straps while discarding the bolts and using new ones which should be tightened to 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.) during the installation process. When removing the front driveshaft maintain proper seating position of the can (domed CV joint housing cover) within the CV joint housing because reseating it will result from flange placement above the housing. The replacement driveshaft requires even cross-patterned tightening of CV joint bolts as a damage prevention method. New CV joint washers and bolts should be used but threadlock along with sealer can be applied to existing bolts when replacement parts are not available. The universal joint strap bolts require replacement but users should place threadlock and sealer on the original bolts when new ones cannot be obtained. Double check that universal joint bearing caps are fully in position against the pinion yoke flange before beginning the universal joint strap bolt tightening process. The procedure ends by performing the reverse steps necessary for a complete installation.
