2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Vapor Canister Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the Vapor Canister on 2005 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: The first step to service the evaporative emission control canister starts with lowering and removing the spare tire followed by disconnecting the battery ground cable for electrical safety. Place the vehicle on a hoisting system and break the mounting fasteners securing the EVAP canister tray. The order to service an EVAP canister assembly starts with lowering its rear end to expose the top where you disconnect the vapor hose on the passenger-side canister followed by rotating the assembly to access the driver-side canister. The service technician must first disconnect the vent solenoid electrical connector followed by the wiring pin-type retainer before removing the vapor hose. Position the EVAP canister assembly on top of a stabilized flat surface and detach both the vapor crossover tube and the vent solenoid vapor hose. To extract the driver side EVAP canister with vent solenoid as a unit separate the tie strap from the driver side gas canister element. The next task involves taking off both the tie strap and vapor crossover tube from the passenger side canister before extracting the passenger side EVAP canister. When installing the system apply O-ring seal lubricant on all O-ring seals followed by performing the reverse direction of removal steps. A leak test of the evaporative emissions system needs to follow installation before performing the evaporative emissions repair verification drive cycle.
