Engine cooling system draining and disconnecting battery ground cable should be completed as the first procedure before servicing and repairing the upper intake manifold. Start by removing the air cleaner outlet pipe followed by the bolt and setting the heater hoses to the side. Hold the spark plug wire boots at the base while twisting them upward to prevent any damage while maintaining the correct terminal associations on the ignition coils. Three left-hand spark plug wires require removal from their ignition coil position while their retainers should be dismounted from the upper intake manifold before setting them aside. For the next step disconnect all electrical and vacuum links regarding the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system module together with the exhaust manifold-to-EGR system module tube and the electronic throttle body electrical connector. Unfasten the clamp to disconnect the fuel vapor tube after which you can remove five wiring harness retainers along with the brake booster vacuum hose from the upper intake manifold. The first steps include disconnection of the vacuum hose connector and the two heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) coolant hoses before proceeding to disconnect the PCV valve hose. The placement of exhaust manifold-to-EGR system module tube requires a tightening torque of 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) followed by connection of electrical and vacuum connectors to the EGR system module. Silicone brake caliper grease combined with dielectric compound should be applied to the inside of the spark plug wire boots before the wires reattach to the ignition coil. The two retainers should be secured to the upper intake manifold. Install the bolt on the heater hoses then tighten it to 5 Nm (44 inch lbs.) before refitting the air cleaner outlet pipe and reuniting the battery ground cable while performing a cooling system fill-and-bleed procedure.
