2005 Ford Focus Oil Pan Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the oil pan on 2005 Ford Focus?
A: Any oil pan servicing work must start by placing the vehicle into neutral position and elevating with a hoist. First disconnect the battery tray by removing 2 positive battery cable pin-type retainers while placing them with the transmission connector wire harness pin-type retainer. The bracket with the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) and catalyst monitor sensor wire connector needs its retaining nut removed before extraction of the bracket. A 5 mm (0.19 in) limit in transmission-to-engine bolt loosening applies because exceeding this amount can create problems; the upper bellhousing-to-engine bolt also needs loosening alongside the stud bolt in the same 5 mm measurement. Drain the oil from the level indicator then follow up by loosening two front lower bellhousing-to-engine bolts which totals 5 mm (0.19 in) for automatic transmission followed by loosening the rear lower engine-to-bellhousing bolt along with the corresponding stud bolt by the same measurement. You must first detach all 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts, 2 oil pan bolts and finally the 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts. The transmission should slide backward by 5 mm (0.19 in) while removing the 2 bolts together with the accessory drive belt splash shield. After draining the engine oil install the drain plug with a proper torque of 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). The installation starts by removing the 4 bolts connecting the engine front cover to the oil pan then continuing with the removal of the 11 oil pan securing bolts. The sealing surfaces require a plastic scraping tool rather than metal tools or scrape for installation cleaning purposes. Sealant should be removed after ten minutes without proper oil pan attachment due to which the area needs cleaning. A bead measuring 2.5 mm (0.09 in) in thickness of silicone gasket and sealant should be applied around the mating surfaces between oil pan and engine block along with oil pan and engine front cover. Place the oil pan onto the engine after applying finger-tightness to the oil pan bolts. Begin by tightening the engine front cover-to-oil pan bolts to achieve a correct alignment of the oil pan with the engine block before torquing them to 10 Nm (89 lb-in). Secure all oil pan bolts at 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) torques starting from the first sequence. The accessory drive belt splash shield receives the 2 bolts that should be tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in). To move the transmission and engine closer together use alternating torque while tightening the front bellhousing-to-engine lower bolts along with the rear engine-to-bellhousing lower bolts until they reach 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Automatic transmission vehicles require tightening of the one remaining lower bellhousing-to-engine bolt whereas manual transmission vehicles need tightening of both such bolts. Attach top and bottom bolts of the rear engine-to-bellhousing stud with 48 Nm torque (35 lb-ft) while also leveraging this torque to secure the 2 bellhousing-to-oil pan bolts and 2 oil pan-to-bellhousing bolts. Reinstall the oil level indicator with the tube before tightening the top bellhousing-to-engine bolt along with stud bolt to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft). Secure the HO2S and catalyst monitor sensor wire connector bracket by fastening first the nut to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft) and proceeding to tighten the bracket nut. As a final step reinstall the battery tray after reattaching the transmission connector wire harness pin-type retainer and the 2 positive battery cable pin-type retainers. Clean engine oil must fill the engine as the last step of the procedure.
