- Q: How to Service and Repair the Rear Coil Springs and Shock Absorber Assembly on 2005 Lincoln Aviator?A: Service and repair of the rear shock absorber and spring assembly begins with removing the wheel assembly together with the tire. The three shock absorber upper mounting plate-to-frame nuts should be discarded and replaced with new ones before installation at 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) torque. The service sequence starts with removing the jounce bumper then the stabilizer link nut along with its grommet before taking out the stabilizer link stud for reinstallation at 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.). The lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut needs replacement with a new nut which requires installation torque at 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.). Before the installation is finished and the vehicle rests on its wheels and tires, do not secure the shock absorber-to-lower arm bolt. After completion, tighten the bolt to 250 Nm (184 ft. lbs.). Remove the shock absorber-to-lower arm flag nut before taking out the shock absorber assembly with the spring. Finishing the assembly requires performing the direct opposite of removal steps and utilizing fresh parts for shock absorber upper mounting plate-to-frame nuts along with lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut and shock absorber-to-lower arm flag nut.
