2005 Lincoln LS Air Bag Control Module Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the air bag control module and ensuring the proper functioning of the restraints control module (RCM) on 2005 Lincoln LS?
A: Before servicing the air bag control module always put on safety glasses because accidental deployment can lead to injuries. A correct orientation of the restraints control module (RCM) ensures proper operation of the air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS). The RCM and bracket should be checked for deformation after any center tunnel collision in which the vehicle participated. RCM replacement becomes necessary when any deformation is detected even if the air bag did not deploy. The RCM mounting area needs to be completely restored back to its original state after any intervention. After a collision it is necessary to inspect the SRS component sensor mounting bracket along with the wiring pigtail for any deformation while replacing and restoring correct position of any elements found to be damaged. Using memory saver devices creates safety hazards so they should never be employed to prevent personal injury. Electronic components display sensitivity to static electricity because such charges produce harmful effects on equipment. Always ensure the correct part is selected for RCM installation to avoid setting wrong diagnostic trouble codes during inspection. When the RCM fuse is taken out with the ignition switch in ON position the air bag warning lamp lights up so it only shows a normal condition without any indication of SRS faults. Vehicle return to customers must only happen after verifying that SRS operates without faults. The first repair should consist of new part installation and a second diagnostic test with original part reinstallation if repair did not solve the problem. First prepare the system by turning power off then take away the floor console while disconnecting the shifter interlock cable without touching the shifter before setting aside the shifter assembly after tightening its bolts to 7 Nm (62 lb-in) torques. Reduce the lower A/C duct first and then remove the two lower ash tray housing bolts which should be tightened up to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) when reinstalling. Begin by disconnecting the two upper housing assembly screws of the ash tray housing followed by disconnecting the upper A/C duct bolt and duct assembly. Use the thumb tab to pinch the RCM electrical connector position assurance lever and pivot it backward before disconnecting both large and small RCM connectors. You should tighten the new RCM bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) when installing the RCM while detaching its bolts first. Insert the large RCM electrical connector straight without bias to protect both connections and components before fully securing it using the lever under light pressure. The repair process ends after conducting the removal procedure in reverse order while powering up the system.
