    A: Safety comes first before the automatic transmission shifter servicing with the need to discharge back up power to stop air bag activation. The ground cable of the battery should be removed along with all auxiliary batteries that may be present during the servicing period which should take at least a minute. The first step in servicing the automatic transmission shifter involves removing the screw that holds the lower steering column opening finish panel while moving the parking brake release handle. Then unscrew a second bolt to free the retaining clips before extraction. The next step involves taking out the five screws which hold down the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement. The ignition switch lock cylinder can be taken out when it reaches the RUN position while pressing the lock cylinder release pin until extraction becomes possible. Start by taking out four screws of the lower steering column shroud then proceed with the upper steering column shroud removal. Detach the transmission control switch (TCS) harness connector then remove the TCS harness from its positions between the locators and gearshift lever cover. The process requires discarding the old gearshift lever pin and must include removal of the gearshift lever. You should finish the installation by implementing the opposite order of removal procedures.
