2005 Mercury Grand Marquis Timing Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on 2005 Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: The initial step for engunning the engine front cover involves hoisting the vehicle into neutral gear and removing the ground battery cable. Both valve covers along with the coolant pump should be taken out before removing the bolts to place the power steering pump temporarily aside. The service requires draining the engine oil through the removal of the oil pan drain plug followed by taking out the four bolts and the crankshaft front oil seal. Begin by removing first the bolt and the belt idler pulley and afterward removing the bolts and stud bolts in the designated order. The sealing surface requires cleaning with only plastic scraping tools because metal scraping methods or abrasives should never be used to avoid damaging the area. A plastic scraping tool should be used to clean gasket surfaces while applying metal surface cleaner. The engine front cover needs to be installed within four minutes or else the sealant must be removed followed by cleaning the sealing area with metal surface cleaner until complete dryness. Sealant application must occur at both cylinder head-to-block and oil pan-to-cylinder block interfaces before installing the engine front cover with its dowels as well as loosely attaching the bolts. Proceed with front cover bolt and stud bolt assembly by first tightening fasteners 1 through 7 to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) then advancing to fasteners 6 through 15 with a torque of 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). After placing the belt idler pulley you need to install the bolts and execute the replacement of the crankshaft front oil seal. Screw the front oil pan bolts into place loosely before tightening them once to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) and continuing to an extra 60 degrees of rotation. The front lower hole of the power steering pump remains unused thus install the power steering pump while securing its bolts. The first step involves reinstalling the oil pan drain plug as well as valve covers and coolant pump and restoring the battery ground connection before pouring engine oil.
