2005 Mercury Montego Evaporator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the evaporator core in an air conditioning system on 2005 Mercury Montego?
A: Service of an evaporator core begins by performing a leak test before removal when leakage is suspected. Repairing the air conditioning system requires a new receiver/drier only when both a failed A/C compressor or damaged receiver/drier is present. Start the evaporator core service by taking off the instrument panel cross beam followed by removal of the 7 upper evaporator core cover screws. Disengage the electrical connector of the blower motor speed control or blower motor resistor then unfasten the wire harness from the evaporator core cover. Untwist the two bolts which fix the floor duct and separate the duct element from the system. After heater core and evaporator core housing bolt removal the bolt needs to be tightened to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) before reassembly ends. To continue with the relocation process begin by unscrewing and removing the 13 lower evaporator core cover screws then detach the evaporator core cover followed by complete removal of the evaporator core itself. Reverse the steps in removal to install the system before lubricating the refrigerant system with the recommended amount of clean PAG oil.
