2005 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Drive Shaft of a 4X2 on 2005 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Before working on the rear driveshaft of a 4X2 vehicle put it in NEUTRAL position while strapping the vehicle onto a hoist. Before separation of the extension housing from the driveshaft apply index marks on both components then after removal identify a transmission output shaft index mark which matches the extension housing index mark. An index mark process must happen between the driveshaft flange and the pinion flange for balanced operations. The four driveshaft flange bolts need removal before discarding them while new bolts must reach torque specification at 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.). A suitable tool should be used for gentle prying at the designated area rather than using hammers to separate the driveshaft flange yoke from the pinion flange due to their tight connection on the pinion flange pilot. The driveshaft flange should be positioned correctly on the pinion flange by evenly tightening bolts according to a cross pattern layout. New driveshaft flange bolts are impossible to obtain so coat original bolts with Threadlock and Sealer TA-25 which satisfies Ford specification WSK-M2G351-A5. The installation requires reverse order procedures.
