2006 Mercury Mountaineer Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service the Rear Drive Shaft on 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The service of rear driveshaft begins after placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position on a hoist. The skid plate should be removed when present. Driveshaft balance can be preserved through index-marking stages between the transfer case rear output flange and driveshaft flange and between the pinion flange and driveshaft flange. The removal of driveshaft flange bolts begins the project while their installation demands a tightness of 112 Nm (83 ft. lbs.). Execute bolt replacement on the transfer case rear output flange after its bolt removal and use a specific torque value for maintenance. Left untreated the driveshaft flange fits tightly with both the axle pinion flange pilot and the transfer case output flange so hammering should be avoided on the driveshaft components and flanges. The designated area must be prised with a correct tool for disengaging driveshaft flanges. Reinstall the driveshaft by making sure all pinion flange faces are square with the flange faces before evenly tightening the bolts across their pattern. It is possible to use threadlocker and sealer on original driveshaft flange bolts for installation but it requires unavailable new bolts. The process should end with new fastener installation and the opposite reinstallation steps.
