2006 Ford E-150 Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the passenger air bag module on 2006 Ford E-150?
A: Safety glasses should be worn at all times while servicing the passenger air bag module to protect against deployment accidents. Keep the live air bag module positioned with deployment door and air bag away from your body while following safety methods that prohibit setting it with the deployment door directed downward. All residue of sodium hydroxide should be cleaned from your hands using soapy water after a deployment. The connectors on air bag modules must not be probed in order to prevent deployment and modules with either discolored or damaged deployment doors need replacement instead of repainting them. The implementation of memory saver devices should always be avoided. The air bag warning lamp turns on when the ignition switch activates the restraint control module (RCM) fuse which exists normally without indicating any fault. Test the SRS system until it demonstrates full operational status and absence of faults prior to handing over the vehicle to the customer. A technician must start by removing the RH lower instrument trim panel and depowering the system then dislodging the 4 bolts from the passenger air bag module and its reinforcement. The first step is to disconnect the passenger air bag module electrical connector followed by removing 6 bolts and then the inner RH lower instrument panel reinforcement mounting bracket which allows you to remove the 2 passenger air bag module bolts. Extract the passenger air bag from its fixture by using retention devices instead of touching the deployment door edges. After clearing passenger air bag alignment rails you must inspect both the alignment locators and J-nuts then position the passenger air bag module correctly on the rails before checking all deployment door tabs are fully installed. Reinstall the inner RH lower instrument panel reinforcement with its 6 bolts then install the RH lower instrument panel reinforcement with its 4 bolts along with the housing of the passenger air bag module by tightening its 2 bolts to 8 Nm (71 lb-in). Finish by reconnecting the electrical connector followed by reattaching the RH lower instrument trim panel. The system requires repowering to finish the service procedure.
