- Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the driver air bag module on 2006 Ford Expedition?A: When working on the driver air bag module of Expedition and Navigator models you need to wear safety glasses because accidental deployments present injury risks. The air bag module must be handled with the air bag and trim cover facing away from your body while it should always remain in an upright position. Hand washing should follow deployment to clear off remaining sodium hydroxide from your skin. Probing any connectors of an air bag module can trigger its deployment. The system power should be disabled first while also unfastening the two steering wheel back cover plugs and the two driver air bag module bolts. Before module removal the Expedition requires users to separate both electrical connectors along with the horn switch connector. Disconnect both electrical connectors together with the steering wheel controls connector at the top of the Clock Spring system within the Navigator model. The unique electrical connectors of the Navigator should always match properly before connection to prevent physical damage. The horn switch connector requires installation on the Expedition together with a correct match of all electrical connectors. Before closing the system check if all components on the back of the driver air bag module and the sides of the steering wheel remain secure while testing the horn mechanism functionality. Connectors should be secured through a two-step sequence starting at 5 Nm (44 lb-in) before moving to 9 Nm (80 lb-in) while keeping the module stationary. You must inspect the opening of the driver air bag module trim cover to the steering wheel because this provides uniform access for correct horn operation. Reinstall the two plugs on the steering wheel back cover while restarting the power system.
