2006 Ford Expedition Steering Knuckle Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken Before Servicing the Rear Steering Knuckle, and What Steps Are Involved in the Process on 2006 Ford Expedition?
A: Service and repair work on the rear wheel knuckle requires turning off the air suspension switch at the LH rear quarter trim panel to maintain the air spring inflation and deflation rates so the vehicle does not unexpectedly shift during operations. This period may result in personal injury. The performance of essential systems depends heavily on Suspension fasteners so they require exact part replacements with the same numbers and strict adherence to torque specifications during reinstallation for solid retention. The working procedure begins by taking out the wheel bearing with hub assembly and then moving to parking brake shoe retaining clips followed by adjuster spring then return spring after that adjuster and finally parking brake shoes. Separate the parking brake cable from the wheel knuckle by depressing the tabs then dispose the toe link-to-wheel knuckle nut during installation tight this new nut to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.). During installation of the new nut replace the upper arm-to-wheel knuckle nut together with bolt yet discard this first nut before performing a torque specification to 150 Nm (111 ft. lbs.). After taking out the lower arm-to-wheel knuckle nut along with bolt and wheel knuckle you should discard the nut while tightening the new nut to 400 Nm (295 ft. lbs.) during installation. Proceed with removing the wheel knuckle bushing when necessary using suitable press equipment along with adapters before reversing all removal procedures. The last step should include verification and modification of the rear wheel alignment if required.
