2006 Ford Explorer Air Bag Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the Air Bag Sensor in the C-pillar on 2006 Ford Explorer?
A: Safety glasses are mandatory when servicing the side impact sensor situated in the C-pillar to protect against unintended air bag deployment injuries. The vehicle sensor needs proper orientation for correct system functioning while inspection of the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail should happen for any vehicle that showed collision damage regardless of air bag deployment. This should be accompanied by sensor and damaged SRS component replacement or repositioning. Omit the use of memory saver devices because they create personal injury hazards. The air bag warning lamp will turn on while the RCM fuse is removed with the ignition switch ON yet this normal operating condition indicates no fault. A vehicle returns to the customer only after the SRS passes full operational checks and shows no faults. Refrain from installing a new part only for repairs unless the issue persists after reinstallation of the original part followed by another diagnostic operation. The side impact sensors provided for the left and right C-pillar areas of the vehicle cannot be exchanged with one another. First power down the system after which remove the rear door scuff plate together with the safety belt anchor bolt before installing the safety belt in a correct manner with 40 Nm (30 lb-ft) torque. You should detach the upper C-pillar trim panel first and set it aside before moving to the quarter trim panel that needs to be pulled out at the C-pillar to release its retaining clips for accessing the side impact sensor. Disconnect the electrical connector from the side impact sensor while recording both the tab position on the bracket for future reinstallation and dry both connector mating surfaces. First detach the two fastening bolts from the side impact sensor and bracket assembly before mounting the new sensor and bracket assembly while tightening both bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft). Proceed with the opposite removal steps to mount the system components before powering up the system unit.
