2006 Ford Explorer Wheel Bearing Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the front 4x2 wheel bearing and wheel hub on 2006 Ford Explorer?
A: Service of the front 4x2 wheel bearing and wheel hub should start with vehicle placement in neutral position and hoisting the vehicle. First inspect the wheel sensor space and clean it when needed before you detach the sensor bolt and disconnect the sensor from the wheel bearing assembly and hub. Remember to install the sensor by tightening it to 18 Nm (13 ft. lbs.). Prevent brake hose damage by not allowing the caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang; discard the bolts and set the caliper pad assembly in place while supporting it with mechanic wire. When reinstalling the system reinforce the caliper and anchor plate assembly bolts to reach 165 Nm (122 ft. lbs.). Separate the brake disc after unscrewing three bolts that anchor the wheel bearing and hub assembly before disposal of the bolts. The wheel bearing and hub assembly bolts need to be tightened to 122 Nm (90 ft. lbs.) while reinstalling the parts before following the reverse steps for assembly completion. The use of new and specified parts with same numbers or equivalents is mandatory during assembly while the correct torque values must be followed to achieve proper suspension fastener retention.
