- Q: What precautions should be taken when servicing the driver air bag module on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?A: Prior to servicing the driver air bag module put on safety glasses to prevent injuries from accidental deployments then handle the module by keeping its air bag and trim cover directed away from your body. It is unsafe to position a live air bag module with the air bag facing downward and hand washing must include soap and water due to exposure to sodium hydroxide residue. The air bag module connectors should never be probed under any circumstances while damaged trim cover modules require replacement rather than repainting. All memory saver devices must be eliminated from use. The system needs to be depowered first before inserting a 4.0 mm (0.15 in) Allen wrench with a blunt end to place marks at 35 mm (1.37 in) and 45 mm (1.77 in) away from the end. The tool should enter through the upper access hole of the steering wheel rear cover while it contacts an obstacle while placing the 45 mm mark close to the cover surface. If misaligned, reposition the tool. Push the tool forward after proper placement to free the steering wheel spring clip from its position where it locks with the driver air bag module pin. The correct positioning of the tool for lower access hole disengagement requires the 35 mm mark until the spring clip departs completely. Continue with the disengagement of the clips on the other side. Disconnection of the driver air bag module requires manual wiring disassembly from the clip followed by tab compression to allow electrical connector detachment including the horn connector. Installation requires connecting the horn electrical connector and matching the Clock Spring electrical connectors to prevent wrong installation. Pull the steered wheel's wiring inside its designated pocket as you slot the driver air bag module into its position using the locking pins. An audible signal will sound once seating is correct. Finally, repower the system.
