2006 Lincoln Town Car Air Bag Sensor Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Precautions Should Be Taken When Servicing the Front Air Bag Sensor on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Safety glasses should be worn while servicing front impact severity sensors because their deployment potentially results in injuries. Install the vehicle sensor in its exact positioning to activate its operating system properly. It is necessary to inspect the sensor mounting bracket and wiring pigtail after a collision to ensure their proper condition because the sensor and supplemental restraint system components must be replaced or repositioned regardless of air bag deployment. The use of memory saver devices should be strictly avoided to protect against personal injuries. When removing the RCM fuse and starting the ignition switch the warning light will activate but this situation indicates no system failure exists. All supplemental restraint system functions need to work without faults before the vehicle receives its return to the customer. Changes to the system should involve new part installation but if the problem remains the original part should be reinstalled along with another diagnostic test. Each side of the hood latch on the radiator core support contains a front impact severity sensor. The process starts by depowering the system followed by hood opening to remove pin-type retainers beside the radiator opening cover assembly. Begin by separating the right-hand horn and bracket assembly bolt then disconnecting its horn electrical connector to extract both assembly parts. Proceed to remove the bolts fastening the front impact severity sensor before disconnecting its electrical connector and taking out the sensor. Follow the reverse order of removal to install the sensor while torquing sensor bolts to 12 Nm (9 lb-ft) and repowering the system.
