2006 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket on 2006 Lincoln Town Car?
A: To service or repair the shift cable and bracket, clients must first switch off air suspension electrical power to stop unexpected air spring dynamics, which could make the vehicle shift while operating and result in incidents that harm personnel. Raise the vehicle into NEUTRAL mode while you disconnect the shift cable from the transmission. First, detach the shift cable from the manual control lever by removing the nut before removing it from the shift cable bracket and shift cable retainer. The shift cable needs to be unclipped from its routing clips heading toward the engine compartment, and the two bolts connecting the shift cable bracket to the transmission need to be removed. Unclip the shift cable at the clip which guides toward the bulkhead before disconnecting it from the steering column through its detachment from the transmission selector lever arm and support and from the steering column bracket. Keep the shift cable retainer. A suitable tool helps to push the rubber grommet through the bulkhead, then pull out the shift cable from the vehicle. The new shift cable installation starts by guiding it through the bulkhead opening with attention to properly seat the rubber grommet. Install the new shift cable retainer before connecting it between the steering column and transmission selector lever arm and support. After setting the gearshift lever to position (D), you should attach a 1.4 kg weight measuring 3 lbs. Fasten the shift cable to the routing clip near the bulkhead and position the shift cable bracket before installing and torquing the bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Join the shift cable to the shift cable bracket before proceeding to connect it to the manual control lever, but install the new shift cable retainer after which you should route the shift cable into the engine compartment upward clips. Complete all adjustments of the shift cable before putting the vehicle on the ground and returning power to the air suspension if it exists.
