2007 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket on 2007 Lincoln Town Car?
A: Begin repairing the selector lever cable and bracket only when electrical power to air suspension is turned off because turning it on-off could lead to unexpected air spring inflation or deflation. The vehicle needs to be in NEUTRAL position while you perform lifting and remove the selector lever cable nut from transmission links then disconnect all cable fragments between the manual lever and bracket and selector lever. The selector lever cable retainer needs discarding before removing the cable from its engine compartment clips and taking out bolts that secure the selector lever cable bracket to the transmission. Workers must detach the selector lever cable from its bulkhead clip and release it from the steering column by unbonding it from the transmission lever arm support and steering column bracket. A new retainer is discarded. A proper tool should be used to push the rubber grommet through the bulkhead before removing the selector lever cable from the passenger compartment. The new selector lever cable requires passage through the bulkhead opening that directs its path toward the transmission while checking that the rubber grommet remains properly in place. Squeeze the selector lever cable locking tabs until they secure and guide the cable end into place by pressing the ball stud. After inserting the stud inside the bracket confirm locking by pulling on the cable. Install the selector lever cable onto the steering column then link it with a new retainer before fastening the bracket against the transmission lever arm and support. Place the (D) position selector and attach 1.4kg (3lb) weight to it. Secure the selector lever cable in the bulkhead area with the clip that routes toward the bulkhead then tighten the selector lever cable bracket screws to 28Nm (lug torque 21 ft. lbs) ensuring the cable stays locked. Place the selector lever cable to the selector lever cable bracket while using a new retainer that mounts to the shift cable bracket. The selector lever cable requires clipping to engine compartment clips for upward routing before adjustments of the cable setting. The air suspension plug has to be enabled last when the vehicle stands on the ground following all cable tuning work.
