2006 Mercury Mariner Shift Knob Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Knob for the automatic transmission on 2006 Mercury Mariner?
A: The first step to repair or service the shift knob for automatic transmission requires a vehicle in neutral position and suspended from a hoist. Use your hands to pry up the upper shift lever trim ring after placing the floor shift lever in the (D) position. Then remove the top finish panel before you take off the shift knob and its wiring. The set screw requires removal before lifting the shift knob and wiring straight up. The shifter straw requires disposal by extracting it through an upward motion. Installation of the new shifter straw requires application of multi-purpose grease followed by its straight downward insertion into the bore. First route the overdrive cancel switch connector along the dash opening before installing the shift knob which requires the set screw. The replacement begins with remounting the top finish panel followed by the upper shift lever trim ring where proper orientation of the driver side front thick tab must be checked before final insertion. The shifter needs to move through park to drive multiple times while checking that the fixing screw does not become overly snug.
