2007 Ford Crown Victoria Differential Cover Parts Q&A

  • Q: What Preparations Are Necessary Before Servicing the Housing Differential Cover on 2007 Ford Crown Victoria?
A: The service and repair process of a differential housing cover requires users to disable the air suspension system by cutting the power at the air suspension switch on the left-hand side of the luggage compartment preventing spring inflation or deflation. Also depower the fire suppression system when it exists in the vehicle. The differential housing cover removal begins once the vehicle is positioned on a hoist in neutral gear and all bolts from the cover and differential housing lubricant draining process have been completed. The machined areas of both cover and differential housing need to be cleared from oil residues before silicone sealant application. The interior of the rear axle needs protection from contamination throughout cleaning activities. The differential housing cover requires installation during the first 15 minutes of silicone sealant application with a continuous bead of sealer and silicone gasket. Fill the axle with lubricant only after silicone cures for at least one hour. To install the differential housing cover you must first secure the axle guard if present then fasten the bolts via the star pattern to a torque of 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Screw and tighten the axle tag bolt to 31 Nm torque (23 lb-ft torque). When working with Traction-Lok axles you should add 118 ml (4 oz) additive friction modifier to the rear axle before removing the axle fill plug yet ensure that the tool recess stays clean to achieve proper engagement of the tool. Reinstall the fill plug after pouring 5.0 pints of specified lubricant by tightening it to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Vehicle owners must activate their fire suppression system during repowering operations; additional steps are required to actuate air suspension control systems before performing a vehicle descent.
