2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the engine front timing cover on 2007 Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
A: Service and repair operations of the engine front cover should start by disconnecting the battery ground cable then draining coolant from the system. The first step includes extracting the crankshaft front seal followed by removing the wiring harness bracket from the front cover and unscrewing the five oil pan-to-front cover bolts. Start by breaking connections between the lower radiator hose followed by the removal of the drive belt tensioner bolt and heater hose separation from the coolant pump. The service procedure starts with removing the electrical connector of the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor and generator connectors and the wiring harness retainer. Start by removing the bolts attaching the generator bracket then the bracket itself before moving on to disconnect the coil bracket-to-left-hand (LH) accessory drive bracket bolt and securing the LH accessory drive bracket with its four bolts. First remove the CKP sensor wiring harness retainers while disconnecting the ECT sensor electrical connector and breaking connection between the upper radiator hose and heater hose from the thermostat housing. The bypass hose clamp should be removed from the coolant pump side and the three thermostat housing bolts need to be taken out. observing the stud bolt positions for reinstallation purposes remove the ten bolts along with the engine front cover and gasket which will be discarded. To install the front cover you should use a plastic scraper to clean the sealing surfaces while avoiding metal tools and silicone gasket remover with metal surface preparation. Position the front cover gasket while coating the oil pan with silicone gasket and sealant and both engine block and front cover with two spots of silicone gasket and sealant. Install the engine front cover and place each of its ten bolts to a torque value of 19 Nm (14 ft. lbs.). Fasten the thermostat housing to its position by tightening the bolts to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.). After that, position the bypass hose clamp and secure both the upper radiator hose and heater hose connections to the thermostat housing. The ECT sensor electrical connection should be installed before installing new wiring harness retainers and positioning CKP sensor wires before attaching the CKP sensor electrical connector. Proceed to place the LH accessory drive bracket followed by a sequence of installing four bolts which requires tightening them to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Install the ignition coil bracket-to-LH accessory drive bracket bolt before tightening it to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.). Select the generator bracket and install the three bolts while they receive a final tightening to 42 Nm (31 ft. lbs.). Connect the generator electrical connectors along with the wiring harness retainer while tightening them to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.) before joining the heater hose to the coolant pump. Place the accessory drive belt tensioner then screw in the bolt before securing it at 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The lower radiator hose must be connected after you install five cylinder block cradle-to-front cover bolts that should be tightened using 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.) for bolted with washers and 14 Nm (10 ft. lbs.) for those without. We should place the wiring harness bracket before installing the nut and securing it with 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.) torque. Complete the work by putting on the crankshaft front seal while also reconnecting the battery ground cable before filling the engine cooling system.
