Ford Explorer Sport Trac Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Engine Front Timing Cover on Ford Explorer Sport Trac?
    A:
Before starting operations on the engine front cover the service technician should mount the vehicle on a hoist with it in neutral position and disconnect the battery ground cable. Start the process by extracting the crankshaft front oil seal along with the cooling system fluid drainage. Users with vehicle A/C should disconnect the bracket nut from the A/C line before placing the line in a safe location. Begin service of the engine front cover by removing the lower cylinder block cradle-to-engine front cover bolts followed by the bolt and wiring harness routing clip and accessory bracket bolts and setting the bracket to the side. Tear off the drive belt tensioner followed by generator wiring removal before placing them both aside. First disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector then you can remove the wiring harness retainer and the generator mounting bracket. Discard the wiring anchors after removing them from the system and position the wiring to the side. You should detach the lower bypass hose clamp from the coolant pump outlet while removing the clamp before extracting both the lower heater and radiator hoses. Sanitize all the bolts from the engine front cover while discarding the gasket. The installation process requires the application of new gaskets along with surface inspection before metal scrapers or abrasive tools remove all residue. Fill the mating surfaces between engine block and Oil Pan with silicone gasket and sealant while also applying it to two locations on the front cover before installing it. Secure the coolant bypass hose clamp as well as the lower radiator hose and lower heater water hose by carefully tightening their attached clamps. Place the wiring harness next attach the bolt before tightening new wiring anchors. Installation of the new generator bracket requires installation of both the generator bracket and the wiring harness retainer followed by CKP sensor electrical connector attachment. The generator wiring receives reconnection while the tensioner for the drive belt with the accessory bracket bolts and routing clip joins the front cover bolt connections to the engine and cylinder block cradle. The required steps for vehicles with A/C consist of installing the A/C line bracket along with its nut. Entirely empty the drained fuel and install the drain plug before proceeding to drain engine oil then replace the crankshaft front oil seal. Engine filling needs both clean engine oil and coolant before reattaching the battery ground wire.
