2007 Ford F-350 Super Duty Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How is the Clock Spring Serviced and Repaired in an Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2007 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
A: Safety glasses must be worn during SRS vehicle Clock Spring assembly repair work to minimize personal injuries and memory saver devices should be avoided for the same reason. The air bag warning lamp operates correctly when the RCM fuse is removed under conditions where the ignition switch is ON. This lamp activation does not signal an SRS fault exists. The vehicle needs to have functioning SRS components which must be faultless before giving it back to customers. The diagnostic process needs you to replace the new component; reinsert the original component to test the repair outcome. Start by discharging power from the system while taking out the driver air bag module. Wheels must be set at straight-ahead before starting the steering wheel removal process. First apply two strips of masking tape to the Clock Spring to avoid accidental rotation while you twist both the handle and the shank of the tilt wheel to remove it. First unlock the ignition switch lock cylinder by placing the ignition to RUN position followed by pushing the release tab while pulling the cylinder outward. Then remove the lower finish panel and the three screws attaching the lower steering column shroud and lastly remove the ignition switch lock cylinder. First remove the upper steering column shroud and after that separate the PATS transmitter from vehicles which use passive anti-theft systems by removing the retaining screw. To begin proceed with removing the key-in-ignition warning indicator switch before disconnecting the Clock Spring electrical connectors and wire harness from the steering column while removing the wire harness retainers. Unfastening the retaining clips makes it possible to take out the Clock Spring. When installing a new Clock Spring replace the key before maintaining the rotor in its center point and preventing its rotation. Start by keeping the Clock Spring outer housing fixed to the body while you push and unlock the anti-rotation tab. Turn the rotor clockwise until you meet resistance before you turn it counterclockwise 2.25 times to reach the middle point. The tape used during removal should be removed from the Clock Spring without letting the spring rotate when repairing with the same component. Oxygenate the Clock Spring through the column retaining tabs then direct its wire harness down along the column while fitting wire harness retainers and establishing the electrical connections. The installation process starts with key-in-ignition warning indicator switch and PATS transmitter if present along with upper steering column shroud and ignition switch lock cylinder which must achieve proper alignment before testing operational integrity. After repowering the system you should put in the driver air bag module together with the steering wheel followed by the tilt wheel handle and shank and finally the lower finish panel and the lower steering column shroud.
