2007 Ford Freestar Automatic Transmission Shifter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Shifter on 2007 Ford Freestar?
A: The service process for the transmission selector lever requires disabling the SRS components as described in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) procedures. Initialization starts with removing the two panel screws from the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover that requires tightening to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs) upon final installation. Follow this with removal of the screws holding the left-hand along with the right-hand instrument panel finish panels and closing the instrument panel opening cover reinforcement by tightening it to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs) while installing. Pivot the steering column opening brace screws then reinstall them by tightening them to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs). Secure the selector lever indicator cable to one side while opening its screw that leads to cable disconnect before tightening to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs) when reattaching. The ignition switch lock cylinder can be removed by putting the key in RUN then pushing the lock release pin while pulling out the cylinder from its position. The first step involves removing the tilt wheel handle translator after which workers should unfasten the three screws holding the lower steering column shroud in place. Following removal of four nuts and the bracket users can lower the steering column which needs tightening to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs) for proper reinstallation. The next step requires removal of the upper steering column shroud. Leave out the old gearshift lever pin during installation because the correct steps require discarding the gearshift lever pin and gearshift lever. You should reverse your removal steps when reinstalling the components.
