2007 Ford Freestyle Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on 2007 Ford Freestyle?
A: Start the repair and servicing process of the selector lever cable by placing the vehicle in neutral position on a hoist. First remove the air cleaner with outlet pipe alongside the center console panel. The selector lever cable end must be disconnected from the selector lever before the tab on the selector lever cable is depressed to lift and extract it from the housing. After exposing the cable retainer and rubber grommet by pulling back carpet and insulation you must remove the 2 bolts for the instrument panel brace. Moving the selector lever cable toward the front of the vehicle lets you position it on top of the rear floor heat duct after you slide the bottom of the instrument panel brace down carefully. Detach the selector lever cable from its retainer by removing the 2 nuts located inside the rubber grommet at the bulkhead. The CVT transaxle selector lever cable requires disconnecting its end first followed by removing its electrical connector from the bracket while pulling the plunger to unlock and remove the cable from its bracket. The procedure for removing the selector lever cable from 6-speed transaxles consists of the same processes as used for disconnecting and extracting the selector lever cable. The procedure begins by taking the brake tube bracket free of its connection to the selector lever cable. The vehicle will require cable pulling through the bulkhead during its removal process. Install the selector lever cable first before attaching two nuts which should be tightened to 7 Nm force (62 inch lbs torque). Place the selector lever cable behind the instrument panel brace before positioning it underneath the rear floor heat duct prior to fastening two bolts for the brace with 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.) torque. The cable must be placed inside the routing clip then the carpet and insulation must be moved to allow insertion of the cable through the shifter housing by pulling it up to verify complete seating. Install the selector lever center console after connecting the selector lever cable end to its base. To install the selector lever cable in 6-speed transaxles, place the cable into the bracket while verifying plunger locking then follow with electrical connector connection before cable end installation. CVT transaxle professionals should perform the installation procedure identically to the ones used for 6-speed transaxles. The process concludes by connecting the selector lever cable to the brake tube bracket, and linking the wire harness afterward. Required adjustments to the selector lever cable can be made before reinstalling the air cleaner and outlet pipe.
