2007 Mercury Grand Marquis Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Shift Cable and bracket for a column shift on 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: The service and repair process for the shift cable and bracket requires users to turn off the electrical power to the air suspension because underruntime inflation or deflation of air springs might cause the vehicle to shift unexpectedly during operations. Service vehicle fire suppression systems by placing them in a depowered state. Begin by placing the vehicle in NEUTRAL position, then hoist it before removing the nut securing the shift cable at the transmission while separating it from both the manual control lever and the shift cable bracket. Remove the shift cable retainer before unclipping the cable from upward routing clips while also removing bolts which secure the shift cable bracket into the transmission. Remove the shift cable from its clip which leads to the bulkhead after you disconnect it from the transmission arm and support and the steering column bracket then discard the retainer. After passing the rubber grommet from engine to passenger space through the bulkhead, wipe the shift cable from its position in the passenger compartment. The new shift cable requires installation by threading it through the bulkhead opening so the transmission receives it with proper placement of the rubber grommet. Lock the shift cable locking tabs while simultaneously snapping the cable end onto the ball stud through the bracket until it clicks. The steering column bracket should receive the shift cable followed by retainer installation then cable attachment to the transmission shift lever arm and support. Put the (D) position on the shift lever and attach a 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight to it. Fasten the shift cable to the bulkhead routing clip then tighten shift cable bracket bolts to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Before connecting it to either the manual control lever, disconnect the shift cable and check its position in the bracket. The new retainer should be installed while connecting the shift cable to its bracket and fitting it into upward clips. Adjust the shift cable before you repower any fire suppression systems that are installed. After making all adjustments, you should connect electrical power to the air suspension system when the vehicle rests on the ground.
