- Q: How to service and repair the intermediate steering shaft on 2007 Mercury Montego?A: You should start servicing or repairing the steering column shaft intermediate by positioning the vehicle on a hoist in neutral gear mode. Put the wheel shaft at straight-ahead direction while taking out the ignition key. The service starts with removing the steering column cover and then the intermediate shaft-to-steering column bolt requires 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) during reassembly. The maintenance process of the intermediate shaft boot bearing clamp requires keeping its clamping mechanism in open position when removing or installing either the clamp or boot bearing or boot assembly. Use an appropriate tool to loosen the intermediate shaft boot bearing clamp from the boot before detaching it from the shaft together with opening the clamp enough for boot removal. Then keep the clamp open for further work. The intermediate shaft-to-steering gear bolt needs to be taken out before performing reinstallation while tightening it to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.). Check that neither end tab of the intermediate shaft boot bearing clamp touches the boot post-installation and ensure the intermediate shaft boot bearing fits correctly inside its retention groove while the outer bearing race stays within the cartridge.
