2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty?
A: A suitable starting point for shift cable service and repair requires positioning the vehicle in neutral on a hoist. The service on shift cable starts by unscrewing the instrument panel lower finish panel and steering column lower shroud. Manual position (D) on the selector lever after placing it into that selection wants a mechanical authentication. The selector lever cable will avoid damage if operators refrain from putting force on the connection area that joins the selector lever arm ball stud to the steering column bracket. Remove the selector lever cable from the steering column by first detaching the connection between the cable and ball stud on the selector lever arm then elevating the locking tab and finally disconnecting the cable from the steering column bracket and completing the process with removal of the selector lever cable retainer. The cable pushpin must be detached from its stud in the dash panel before carefully pushing the rubber grommet and selector lever cable through the floor pan. The application of force in this area will lead to damages therefore keep this connection area free of any contact pressures. Remove the selector lever cable retaining clip followed by taking out both cable and the bracket through the transmission. The installation of the selector lever cable bracket requires transmission attachment before torque up to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). The manual lever should go to the (D) position and the selector lever cable locking tabs must be properly in place with the cable end attached to the ball stud. To secure the selector lever cable properly insert it into the bracket and listen for the clicking sound then verify its locked position. The installation requires using a new retaining clip to join the selector lever cable with the manual control lever. The rubber grommet and selector lever cable should pass through the floor pan before attaching the cable pushpin to a dash panel stud. The connection of selector lever cables to the steering column must be completed with retention of secure retainers and connections followed by installation of the steering column lower shroud and screws and instrument panel lower finish panel and selective adjustment of the selector lever cable.
