2008 Ford Focus Exhaust Manifold Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter on 2008 Ford Focus?
A: The first step when servicing or repairing the exhaust manifold along with the catalytic converter is to hoist the vehicle into a neutral position while releasing all fuel system pressure. You should start by removing the two catalytic converter-to-exhaust flexible pipe nuts with their gasket and then proceed to take out the four bolts which secure the catalytic converter-to-engine bracket and the three bolts from the lower heat shield. The removal process requires engine repositioning so the user should disconnect the roll restrictor bolt while also removing electrical connectors from the catalyst monitor sensor and heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). The 6 upper heat shield bolts need to be removed as do the 2 retainers from the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield while disconnecting the 2 vapor jumper tube-to-EVAP canister purge valve quick connect couplings which must be set aside. The first step requires disconnecting both the fuel tube quick connector and the EVAP purge valve electric cable followed by removal of the two EVAP valve bracket bolts before relocating the assembly. Dispose of the 7 catalytic converter nuts together with the 7 catalytic converter-to-cylinder head studs. The catalyst needs thorough cleaning followed by inspection before reinstalling it. Position a new gasket on the engine while using 7 new catalytic converter-to-cylinder head studs that should be tightened to 17 Nm (13 lb-ft). An assistant will need to slowly reduce the position of the catalytic converter while keeping the heat shield protected from the valve cover. 7 new nuts need installation for the catalytic converter positioning on the engine so the nuts should be tightened in two stages at 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) each for exhaust leak prevention. Install the engine lifting eyelet followed by its bolt and apply 45 Nm (33 lb-ft) of torque before moving forward with fitting the EVAP canister purge valve and bracket assembly with 2 bolts at 6 Nm (53 lb-in). The electrical connector must be connected to the EVAP canister purge valve before both quick connect couplings between the 2 vapor jumper tube and EVAP canister purge valve and fuel tube. Fasten down the EVAP canister purge valve heat shield before securing it with the 2 retainers. Then, connect the HO2S and catalyst monitor electrical connectors. Position the lower heat shield first and then install the 3 bolts to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft) tightness followed by installing the roll restrictor bolt to 70 Nm (52 lb-ft). First bolt the catalytic converter-to-engine bracket with torque of 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) before tightening the 2 catalytic converter bracket-to-engine bracket bolts to 23 Nm (17 lb-ft). The installation process ends by tightening 2 new catalytic converter-to-exhaust flexible pipe nuts to 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) and attaching the upper heat shield through 6 bolts with a torque of 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
