2008 Ford Focus Catalytic Converter Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service the catalytic converter on 2008 Ford Focus?
A: Service procedures for the catalytic converter must start by hoisting the vehicle in neutral position. Begin by venting the fuel system pressure before removing the 2 catalytic converter-to-exhaust flexible pipe nuts along with their gasket and discarding them. The following steps include catalytic converter-to-engine bracket bolt removal along with lower heat shield bolt detachment through 4 and 3 bolts respectively. The engine needs adjustment during removal so you should remove the roll restrictor bolt. The first procedure requires disconnecting catalyst monitor and heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connectors before removing six upper heat shield retaining bolts. You should first disconnect the 2 vapor jumper tube-to-EVAP canister purge valve quick connect couplings and put them aside. Then remove the 2 retainers along with the evaporative emission (EVAP) canister purge valve heat shield. Separate the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector from its fittings as well as the fuel tube quick connect coupling. Unfasten the 2 bolts of the EVAP canister purge valve bracket before moving the assembly away. The process requires discarding 7 catalytic converter nuts together with the engine lifting eye bolt. An assistant should carefully raise the catalytic converter along with the lower heat shield without the parts touching the valve cover before completely removing the converter from the vehicle and throwing out the gasket. Separate the 7 catalytic converter-to-cylinder head studs from their installation position before cleaning up and visually inspecting the catalytic converter. You should start the installation process by mounting seven new catalytic converter-to-cylinder head studs while applying torque up to 17 Nm (13 lb-ft). You must position the new gasket on the engine before your co-worker helps you to lower the catalytic converter along with the heat shield into position while rolling the shield toward the LH side of the vehicle onto the converter. Position a new gasket on the engine and install 7 new nuts to secure the catalytic converter onto its position. Tighten the nuts in two steps for exhaust leak prevention with a torque of 55 Nm (41 lb-ft) during each step. Attach the engine lifting eyelet along with its bolt while tightening it to 45 Nm (33 lb-ft). Fasten the EVAP canister purge valve assembly to its bracket while tightening 2 bolts to 6 Nm (53 lb-in). Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector and then connect the 2 vapor jumper tube-to-EVAP canister purge valve and fuel tube quick connect couplings. After installing the retainers on the heat shield attach it while linking the HO2S and catalyst monitor electrical connectors. Secure the roll restrictor bolt at 70 Nm (52 lb-ft). Fasten the lower heat shield with its three bolts and secure all bolts to 11 Nm torque (8 lb-ft). The catalytic converter-to-engine bracket should be fastened using 2 bolts to achieve 47 Nm (35 lb-ft) torque along with the new gasket between the 2 catalytic converter-to-exhaust flexible pipe nuts which require a torque of 47 Nm (35 lb-ft). To finish installation use the 6 bolts and tighten them to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
