2008 Ford Taurus X Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable on 2008 Ford Taurus X?
A: The servicability and repair of the selector lever cable start with placing the vehicle in neutral gear while having it on a lifting device. The first step requires removing the center console followed by detaching the selector lever cable end from the selector lever even while pressing its 2 tabs. To reach the cable retainer and rubber grommet underneath carpet and insulation you must disconnect them from the floor and guide the cable through the heater housing area. Disconnect the mass air flow sensor electrical connector and remove the engine breather from the air cleaner assembly after taking out the 2 nuts securing the rubber grommet at the bulkhead. To start the procedure remove two bolts attaching the air cleaner assembly while loosening the air cleaner outlet pipe clamp near the throttle body and eliminating the air cleaner assembly with its outlet pipe. The first step entails disconnecting the selector lever cable retainer from the brake tube bracket before moving to disconnect the selector lever cable end from the manual lever. Use your fingers to press the two tabs located on the bracket in order to remove the selector lever cable. Position the selector lever cable correctly in the vehicle bracket before installing it while securing its tabs into position. Insert the selector lever cable retainer onto the brake tube bracket followed by installing the selector lever cable, placing the grommet and tightening the 2 nuts to 7 Nm (62 lb-inch). Make the selector lever cable pass through the heater housing space and secure the retainer to the floor before reinstalling the carpet. Insert the selector lever cable onto its housing while verifying that the tabs remain locked and connect the selector lever cable end to the lever. Proceed by positioning the selector lever in drive position along with manual lever at drive setting before rotating the manual lever forward until stopping and backward by one detent. Release the adjuster by moving the locking tab and adjust the cable end to reach the manual lever. To finish the procedure, attach the selector lever cable end to the manual lever then direct the adjuster tab to place itself in the lock position with the adjuster locking tab not locked. Place the air cleaner assembly and install its 2 bolts by tightening them to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft) before tightening the air cleaner outlet pipe at the throttle body to 5 Nm (44 lb-inch). Reconnect the engine breather to the air cleaner assembly then the maf sensor electrical connector while installing the center console. The vehicle must start only when in park and neutral and the reverse lamps should illuminate during reverse.
