2008 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Shift Cable and Bracket on 2008 Lincoln Town Car?
A: The first step for servicing and repairing the selector lever cable and bracket is to disconnect power to the air suspension system because unexpected air spring inflation or deflation could shift the vehicle unexpectedly during work. Proceed to disconnect the selector lever cable from the transmission while the vehicle sits in NEUTRAL position on a hoist then remove the nut before unhooking both the cable and the manual control lever. After disconnecting the cable from the selector lever cable bracket you must remove the retainer. The cable should be unclipped from its clips before increasing its travel through the engine compartment. The transmission bracket should be separated from its bolts to complete this operation. The cable requires unclipping from its bulkhead clip before disconnecting it from both the steering column and transmission selector lever arm and support. Finally remove the retainer. Stand with the suitable tool to guide the rubber grommet through the bulkhead opening before taking out the selector lever cable from the vehicle. When installing the new selector lever cable insert it through the bulkhead opening towards the transmission while checking that the rubber grommet is fully positioned properly. Press the cable end onto the ball stud until it clicks and apply a locking motion to the tabs located on the selector lever cable. Inspect cable security after pulling it until it becomes locked before attaching the cable to the steering column while adding new retaining equipment. Suspend the transmission selector lever arm and attach both cable ends between its bracket and the steering column bracket. Hang a 1.4 kg weight onto the selector lever which should be located in the (D) position. The selector lever cable needs to be clipped at the clip while the clip directs it toward the bulkhead followed by installation of the selector lever cable bracket before tightening each bolt to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Secure and properly install the cable on the ball stud before attaching it to the selector lever cable bracket while omitting the manual control lever connection. Fasten the new retainer then link the cable to the bracket before placing it on routing clips inside the engine compartment for adjustment of the selector lever cable. After setting all adjustments while the vehicle rests on the ground you should turn on power to air suspension if present before pulling out the weight.
