2009 Lincoln Town Car Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the shift cable on 2009 Lincoln Town Car?
A: At the beginning of shift cable service you should start by placing the vehicle into NEUTRAL mode on a hoist. Service the shift cable by first taking out the nut at the transmission to disconnect the selector lever cable from the manual control lever and next detaching it from the selector lever cable bracket before removing the retainer clip. Detach the cable from the frame-mounted routing assist bracket before unhooking it from the retainer and then extract it via the clip which ascends through the engine compartment. The process of cable replacement begins by removing bolts which secure the selector lever cable bracket to the transmission. Then unclip the cable from the bulkhead-leading clip and separately disconnect it from both the transmission lever arm support and selector lever arm within the steering column. After these steps discard the retainer. The bulkhead gets cleared of the rubber grommet by using appropriate equipment before removing the selector lever cable from the automobile. To install the new selector lever cable you must first pass the cable through the bulkhead opening before seating the rubber grommet into place. Secure the cable end to the ball stud by pushing it into the bracket until it achieves the click-point. After cable installation on the steering column you should place a new retainer before mounting it to the steering column bracket together with the transmission selector lever arm. Keep the selector lever in position (D) while attaching 1.4 kg (3 lb) weight to it. Route the cable through the assist bracket by securing it with the retainer after clipping it to the routing clip toward the bulkhead. Tighten the bolts of the selector lever cable bracket to 28 Nm (21 lb-ft). Check that locking tabs are in place before installing the cable end correctly on the ball stud. Connect the cable to the selector lever cable bracket but do not attach it to the manual control lever and install a new retainer before clipping it to the upward routing clips. Complete the process by readjusting the selector lever cable and then remove the extra weight attached to it.
