2008 Mercury Grand Marquis Axle Shaft Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the axle shaft assembly on 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis?
A: Safety measures must be established before servicing or repairing the axle shaft assembly given the presence of a fire suppression system on the vehicle. Support the brake caliper with mechanic's wire while removing the brake caliper together with the brake disc. You should place the rear brake anti-lock sensor to the side after removing its bolt. Start by removing the lock bolt followed by the differential pinion shaft from the differential housing after setting aside the differential pinion gears to avoid dropping them. First push the axle shaft toward its inner position then extract the U-washer from its location. Secure the differential pinion shaft by pushing the axle shaft outboard installed before using the lock bolt finger-tight. The maintenance of wheel bearing oil seals needs careful handling during this procedure because any damage must be avoided. Before installing the differential pinion shaft apply long-life grease to both sides of the wheel bearing oil seal but remove the shaft a second time and discard the lock bolt. First position the axle shaft without harming its rubber O-ring and seat the U-washer in the side gear by extending the axle shaft outward. The installation requires you to position the lock bolt hole with the differential pinion shaft hole before inserting a new lock bolt that you must tighten up to 30 Nm (22 lb-ft). Attach the differential housing cover after tightening the rear brake anti-lock sensor bolt to 7 Nm (62 lb-inch) and mounting the rear brake caliper together with the brake disc. Review and reestablish the fire suppression system after following safety protocols which will prevent severe personal harm during this procedure.
