2008 Mercury Mountaineer Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Clock Spring Assembly on 2008 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The repair and servicing process for the Clock Spring assembly starts with remove both the driver air bag module and steering wheel from the vehicle. Begin the procedure by uninstalling the two screws which keep the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover secured followed by unfastening the three screws on the lower steering column shroud and proceeding to take out the upper steering column shroud. First disconnect the electrical connector of the Clock Spring before using two screws to position aside the steering wheel rotation sensor and complete the removal with the two screws used for the Clock Spring. Deinstall the anti-rotation key from the Clock Spring only after installing the steering wheel because early key removal risks Clock Spring damage during centralization. Begin by installing the Clock Spring tightly with its screws before adding the steering wheel rotation sensor that needs two screws for installation and connecting the Clock Spring electrical connector. The installation process requires placing the upper steering column shroud first then adding the lower steering column shroud with its three screws before completing with the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover and its two screws. The correct centralization position of the Clock Spring will lower the risk of premature failure but incorrect positioning requires additional centralization steps. Before reinstalling a reused Clock Spring it should remain in the center while handling it carefully to prevent excessive turn of the inner rotor which might damage the wire ribbon inside. A new Clock Spring installation should be followed by installing the steering wheel unless the anti-rotation key remains in place. The inner rotor needs clockwise rotation of 2-1/2 revolutions from counterclockwise movement until it reaches 12 o'clock position. Ensure the wiring and connector are properly situated at this orientation. Steering wheel installation needs to begin only after road wheels are positioned exactly straight ahead. As the final step when installing a new Clock Spring it is necessary to uninstall the anti-rotation key to install the driver air bag module.
