2007 Mercury Mountaineer Clock Spring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How is the Clock Spring Serviced and Repaired in an Air Bag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) on 2007 Mercury Mountaineer?
A: The Clock Spring assembly repair requires wearing safety glasses as a protection measure when dealing with air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) vehicles because of accidental deployment risks and memory saver devices should be avoided. The RCM fuse removal with the ignition switch activated will make the air bag warning light illuminate but this normal condition indicates no SRS malfunction exists. Serious maintenance work must end only when the SRS proves fully functionable and fully free of system faults to allow vehicle return to customers. The repair process includes new part addition but if the problem remains the technician should replace the original component then run the diagnostic check once more. Start the procedure by switching off system power while positioning road wheels toward forward direction. Begin by lowering the steering wheel register and apply the tilt handle lock before taking away the driver air bag module and steering wheel. First unscrew the two screws on the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover before moving to the lower steering column shroud screws and eventually remove the upper steering column shroud. The technician must disconnect the electrical connector of the Clock Spring before removing the two screws and setting aside the steering angle sensor before proceeding with removal of the two Clock Spring securing screws. The new Clock Spring goes in position first before you secure both screws followed by a proper installation of the steering angle sensor through its two screws. Secure the Clock Spring electrical connector and install the upper and lower steering column shrouds alongside the instrument panel lower steering column opening cover with its appropriate screws. The process calls for deploying the steering wheel followed by removal of the Clock Spring sealing key only after a new Clock Spring installation. To avoid premature component failure when using an existing Clock Spring you must maintain correct centralization by holding the outer housing stationary then turning the rotor counterclockwise until resistance is felt followed by clockwise turning that reaches 2-1/2 turns until both rotor wiring and connector reach the 12 o'clock position. Keep the rotor from turning at this position. The technician must restart the centralization procedure any time the vehicle remains empty. The procedure ends with the installation of the driver air bag module before the system receives power.
